Building Climate Resiliency in Underserved Neighborhoods – New York, New York

Situation

El Puente, a human rights organization in Brooklyn, New York, has spent decades using art, science and community engagement to educate and advocate for the health and wellness of people in the Williamsburg and Bushwick neighborhoods. El Puente requested assistance in building staff capacity to educate local communities on reducing climate change impacts and adopting climate-friendly practices.

Solution

Skeo relied on our in-house expertise in researching climate change impacts and model climate solutions at the local, state and national level. We then developed a bilingual booklet – “Climate Change in Our Community” – that discusses how climate change may impact flooding, public health and household expenses in area neighborhoods. It also emphasizes actions communities can take to reduce climate change impacts.

Outcomes

During development of the booklet, Skeo facilitated a workshop with El Puente that helped its staff build a deeper understanding of the potential effects of climate change on people’s livelihoods. This information is now part of their outreach to area youth and community members.
